California

Jerry on Lombard Street which is known for being the most crooked street in the U.S. (8 switchbacks in one block)

Riding the trolley was lots of fun, especially on the steep streets of San Francisco. Jerry is pictured here with our friends and fellow hosts, Matt and Amy Wilczek.
This was the outdoor area for the prison inmates at Alcatraz. They would get minimal time outside, and it was almost always gusty.
One of the 300+ cells at Alcatraz.
Jerry next to some empty wine barrels at Nickel and Nickel winery in Nappa. These barrels are only used at most twice by the winery, and then they are able to sell them empty for over $1000 to other wineries.

Dinner at the Lodge on the 18th hole of Pebble Beach golf course.
Enjoying spa time with the girls

Each night a bagpiper would stroll the grounds of our resort. On our last evening she stopped and played for a while at our outdoor reception.

Jerry and I were in San Francisco and Pebble Beach for a trip with Caterpillar this past week. The first part of the trip (Thursday-Sunday) was spent in San Francisco with 5 other host couples and 15 Caterpillar forklift dealers and their spouses. We toured Alcatraz, went out to Nappa, walked and explored Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, and Chinatown, and ate basically nonstop. On Sunday we took a large bus with 2 other host couples and 5 dealers/spouses and headed down the coast to Pebble Beach. The drive was beautiful and along the way we stopped for a glorious lobster, clam, mussel, clam chowder, key lime pie lunch. After checking into our room at Spanish Bay Resort we had time to relax before heading over to the Lodge for dinner which overlooks the 18th hole at Pebble Beach. The views were spectacular, and it kept reminding me of that movie The Truman Show where Jim Carrey realizes his whole life has taken place on a movie set. It just seemed too perfect. The next few days went by in kind of a blur...a lot of golf time for Jerry and spa time for me. One afternoon I drove into Monterey and Cannery Row for some shopping. Thursday we came home to happy kids who were well taken care of. Now Jerry and I are both in detox mode...no more staying up and sleeping in, no more consuming thousands of extra calories a day, no more martinis with lunch, no more maid making my bed each day! It is good to be home though and see my three babies!

Wow! A trip like that should keep you revved up for the rest of the summer! I'd love to catch up and hear more stories from your trip because...where there's a Sytsma, there are stories! :)
